World MasterCard Fashion Week – Day 1 & 2

Although the frigid temperatures may have put a damper on attendees’ outfit plans, the city’s most stylish were out in full force to check out the opening days of World MasterCard Fashion Week with smiles on their faces. And with good reason – Canada’s top design talent was ready to shine.

Chloé Comme Parris was the hot ticket for the first day of shows, and they certainly did not disappoint. Riffing on a grunge motif, designers Chloé and Parris Gordon each brought their respective talents to the table. A delicate print reminiscent of the Art Nouveau era gave softness to tomboyish pieces, and a sexy slash cut-out in some of the garments intensified the rocker vibe.

Leather, velvet and knitwear pieces were perfectly produced, showcasing the Gordon sisters’ attention to detail that goes beyond just dreamy silhouette design; the incorporation of chain detailing also showcased their deft skills.

Similarly, designer Laura Siegel‘s F/W13 collection was comprised of ultra-skilled craftsmanship – details were minute and well-placed, and Siegel’s commitment to working with artisans around the world was exemplified in the stellar printwork and beautifully layered pieces.

Siegel kept her colour palette simple but striking – greens and burgundy took center stage, with hints of cream accenting oversized tunics and maxi dresses.

Klaxon Howl served up another season of well-tailored menswear (there were a few pieces for women, too). Designer Matt Robinson said during the show’s opening video clip that he’s not looking to re-invent the wheel with his designs, but rather give his clients what they want – workwear that looks fantastic, but is also functional.

Robinson used pieces like the vest, collegiate jacket and khaki pant, and his fabric choices – camouflage, cotton and denim – were at their most masculine done in these classic shapes.

And from the classic to very contemporary: Sid Neigum closed the shows yesterday with a beautiful collection that played light against dark. Opening with a range of delicate, bright white dresses and separates, Neigum utilized his theme of “optimistic post-apocalyptic” to balance the contrast of materials and prints throughout the show.

Most interesting was Neigum’s use of textiles; known for his broody, androgynous pieces in the past, checks, florals and a muddy abstract print done in emerald green gave personality to coats and jackets (which in my opinion, are Neigum’s specialty). This move is indicative of Neigum’s growth as an artist; one willing to accommodate new elements into his practice, but who will ultimately stay true to the aesthetic we know and love.

Lust-Worthy Leather

It is no surprise that leather has always been a hot commodity in any fashionista’s fall wardrobe. But this upcoming season’s lust for leather has been taken to new levels. Gone are the days where leather is strictly worn as a means to show you are hardcore and rebellious.  The leather ensembles that were shown on the fall 2012 runways were of polished and feminine proportions. From demure skirts to peplum jackets; the more leather, the more chic. Take a look a Judy Inc’s picks of the best pieces of the season.

Cheap Chic No Longer Limited to Your Closet: H&M Home Takes on North America, 2013

Already available in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, H&M home collections are coming to the U.S. in 2013.

According to WWD, H&M will produce three collections (organized by room) each season, and will release new décor and accessories every two weeks.

The designs for the pieces will be inspired by runway trends. H&M Home’s UK website features everything from under-stated linens to a blossoming table runner, all reasonably priced (duh!).

We hope the expansion is an effort by H&M to inch the home collections over to Canada. Don’t forget about us, H&M! Although this does give us a great excuse for a road trip.

Soop Soop: Vintage Styles Just a Click Away

If Kensington and Queen West didn’t supply Toronto with enough art-deco button-up polos and 80s denim, a new shop has surfaced for vintage lovers to flock to.

Soop Soop opened last week, and the store is already gaining a fan base.

But hipsters don’t fret—you won’t have to sift through mounds of old clothing to find the perfect Mickey Mouse muscle tee. Soop Soop is exclusively online.

Not only does the cyber store offer vintage clothing for men and women, it also “reforms” old clothing and turns it into fresh, trendy pieces.

The ultimate goal of the store is to “[save] a whole lot of clothing from a landfill by finding ways to reinvent items deemed garbage because of an ink stain, tear or outdated shape,” reports Toronto Life.

Who knew recycling could look so good? We love it.

Skin Vitality Medical Clinic Announces Winners of $10,000 Make-Over Contest

Toronto, ON: Skin Vitality has just announced the winners of the $10,000 make-over contest entitled “Look 10 Years Younger.” In partnership with Allergan, Skin Vitality had set out to find the next faces of Skin Vitality. “First of all I would like to personally thank all of you wonderful Women who entered our contest this year. We had so many entries and it was very difficult to pick the winners for each location. So many Women had such compelling stories but our judges had to select 5 winners so here they are.” Says Eleanor Welsh, President and Founder of Skin Vitality Medical Clinic.

- Kitchener Location – Deborah L.

6

Her story: Ever since Deborah was 10 yrs. old she has been looking after others. Her Mother left her abusive Father and worked several jobs to provide for the four children. At that time Deborah had started to do the house cleaning, prepare meals, cut grass, shovel snow and whatever needed to be done so her mother would not have to. In grade 6 she did her speech on Florence Nightingale. Then a series of bad news when her Grandmother got cancer who she took care of, all while going to school, cleaning at home and working part-time. That is when she decided to become a nurse. At 20 yrs. old she got married and had a Daughter with a man just like her Father. After 1 yr. she left him and 4 yrs later enrolled in a RN Assistant Program. She found a job taking care of Geriatrics and washed, fed and tucked the elderly into their beds at night. It gave her a lot of confidence and a great sense of accomplishment. During one summer her Mother hurt her back so, she took care of her, while she cared for 7 children in a daycare. When her Daughter was 16 she became a Grandmother and spent the next 3 yrs. caring, loving and nurturing her Grandson. More recently, She took on the task of living with and caring for my challenged Aunt. Everyone has left her house now and for the first time in 43 yrs she has all the time in the world. She is at the point where she is looking to make changes in her life and meet new people. She has been caring for others most of her life and now she says “it’s time for ME.” She said that when she looks in the mirror she sees all the years of looking after others and not herself. “We chose Deborah because of her devotion to taking care of others, it is more than our pleasure to now take care of her.” Says Eleanor Welsh, Founder & President of Skin Vitality.

- Mississauga Location – Debbie W.

7Her story: Debbie said she is always asked “Are you tired”, even when she is not. She said the wrinkles and changing pigmentation around her eyes (dark circles) are making her look fatigued. One-day, her daughter came up to her, and snuggled, but had ruined the moment when she gently caressed her face and commented on how she has aged. She said her inner soul feels about 35, but when she looks in the mirror, she sees something different. Debbie would love to look 10 years younger so her outer beauty will match my inner beauty. “At Skin Vitality we want to help our clients turn back the hands of time, we want their outer beauty to match their inner beauty and this is exactly what we are going to do for Debbie.” Says Welsh.

- Richmond Hill Location – Trish M.

8Her story: Trish came wrote to us because, just as many Women, she wanted to feel better about herself and not look tired and sad at the end of the day. She has strong values and always puts her family first, often forgetting to do the basics for herself. She loves who she is on the inside, but sometimes she said she is shocked at how she looks. She is looking to change her life and feel positive about the way she looks.  “Trish is only 46 and we felt that she represents many Women who are out there. It is our goal with Trish as it is for all who come into Skin Vitality, to help give her that confidence back that she once had.” Says Welsh.

- Ajax Location – Donna H.

9Her story: Donna had just spent the last 3 years taking care of her mother in-law who had Alzheimers, unfortunately she past away in December, 2010. She had also left the health care field after 30 years. So after many years of looking after others and caring for them she was looking at the next chapter in her life. She made a commitment to herself to get healthy and stay young. She has always taken care of people and she say’s she always will, just in a different way. “We have seen so many stories of phenomenal Women taking care of others and Donna is no acception, we know how hard it can be to loose someone and we want to help make Donna’s new chapter a memorable one.” Says Welsh.

- Toronto, Yorkville Location – Grace L.

10Her story: Grace is a 44-year-old mother of 3 beautiful girls, 12, 10 and 6.  Her eldest daughter has dyspraxic, a neurological motor planning disorder.  She had to recently move cities so that her daughter could attend a school that caters to kids like her.  She is doing well and her other 2 daughters have adjusted nicely. However, the strain of living apart from her husband, raising a child with exceptional needs and adjusting to a new life has decided to demonstrate itself most clearly on her face.  She mentioned that she looks drawn and tired on a good day, and she says she does not feel that way.  She is thrilled with her decision and excited to see the changes that will take place for her girls. She wants her outward appearance to reflect her new found “life balance”. “This story really touched us, we want to give Grace back that life balance she so deserves.” Says Welsh.

Each of the five winners of our contest were consulted and may have received the following (varying for each individual); a SoftLift™ (a combination of Botox® & Juvederm™), a series of FotoFacial RF & Skin Tightening treatments (to rejuvenate the skin and rid it of brown spots, sundamage and broken capillaries), Latisse (eyelash growth serum) and a series of the FDA approved VelaShape™ Inch Loss & Cellulite Reduction as used by Kim Kardashian and other top celebrities. They were treated to a personal shopping session with a stylist, had their hair and make-up done by a professional make-up and hair stylist, a professional photo shoot and had a party thrown for them with all of their friends, family and community for the big reveal.
