JORDANA MAXWELL’S

TOP TIPS FOR
TOTAL BEAUTY

ONE

Drink lots of water…above and
beyond any beauty product,
beauty starts from the inside out.

TWO

Trim your hair often….split ends
start at the bottom and then
left unattended will move up
the hair shaft eventually
breaking the hair
completely (and NO you cannot
repair splitends – that is a myth!
you can only cut them off)

THREE

If you usually only wear
concealer where needed but
on occasion feel you need
extra coverage try blending
some concealer with your
moisturizer and using
that instead of foundation.

FOUR

At home hair masks have
always worked wonders, get
online and look up some
recipies for your hair type, olive
oil and mayonnaise are both
great ingedients to look out for!

Marble Manicure DIY Tested by Andrea Claire

First: credit where credit due: I just saw this manicure yesterday tweeted from Modern Salon. I thought – ok – sure – for clients but this could also be one for the DIY’er. I cleaned off my 3 day old, salon pro-manicure and pulled out my editorial nail kit.

untitled

As recommended in the Modern Salon instructions, I choose  three shades: Sally Hansen White Tip, Essie Splash of Grenadine, and OPI Lincoln Park After Dark. Then, in room temperature water I poured in the Sally Hansen White Tip. At first it seemed to really thin out in my plastic container, so i was concerned this wouldn’t work out:

untitled1

I proceeded with the next steps laid out in the Modern Salon blog.

untitled3

Layer in a Bullseye… Then swirl with a toothpick..

untitled4

AND DIP! (makes me think of Roger Rabbit – NOT THE DIP!!)

untitled5

To clean up edges it may help to wrap an orange stick with cotton and dip it into nail polish remover. Clean up edges… et viola!

Babe in the Biz: Celebrity Hair and Makeup Artist Andrea Claire

Andrea-Claire-bio-shot

Today I’d like to introduce you to Andrea Claire, a hair and makeup artist I first met many magazine jobs ago—and whose down-to-earth manner belies her impressive CV and INSANE talent.

I can’t remember much about the story I was working on when I contacted Andrea, but I do remember that she very generously invited me over to her home in Toronto for a marathon makeup sesh! I brought my haul of products, which she went through one by one, telling me which to keep and which didn’t suit me. At the end, she did my makeup—and to this day, it remains one of my favourite looks EVER (I took pictures). All the while, she dispensed an unreal amount of advice—in fact, Andrea was the first one to teach me about lining your lower lashes with coloured liner, a look I’ve loved ever since.

Andrea has since left us for the tropics—she’s now based in Austin, Texas, and moves to Singapore next month! (Check out her pool video from yesterday and you will be très jealouse.) But you can get a near-daily dose of her wisdom at her beauty blog, Beauty & The Blog, or follow her on Twitter. I got to pick her brain about her all-time fave products and tips, so read on:

Beauty Insider Credentials Well. I am a licensed hair stylist and makeup artist with print, runway and on-air makeover experience in Toronto, Singapore, New York and parts in between. My television and on-air makeover credits include Canada’s Stylin’ Gypsies, So Chic, Canadian Idol, and various TV guest appearances. My work has been seen in campaigns for L’Oréal Paris, Revlon, Lancôme, Unilever and P&G, and I’ve led teams for fashion weeks in New York and Toronto. My celebrity clients have included: Lady Antebellum, Great Big Sea, Kelly Rowan, Miranda Richardson, Sarah Slean, Alanis Morissette, Bill Nighy, The Veronicas, Natalie Imbruglia, Dayle Haddon, Hot Hot Heat and others.

Beauty Icons I think the best icons of beauty come from the Old Hollywood screen starlets. Woman then had such a glamorous, sophisticated beauty ease about them but seemed empowered (maybe it was some of their femme fatale characters), all in one package. Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Veronica Lake. (Although politically and for equality, we have come a long way, baby!) Watch Adam’s Rib or Roman Holiday—I’ll refrain from listing them all! I have about 30 old movies—love them!

Top Five Beauty Products L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara—it NEVER bleeds and you see LASHES. (With mascara, wear it—don’t let it wear you—and don’t be too subtle about it.) Jemma Kidd Make Up School Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme. I have used this for years now! It’s the best highlighter for on top of blush, on your brow bone—where ever you want a great glow. FACE atelier Ultra Foundation. This silicone-based foundation gives great coverage but it looks like skin—weightless and breathable. I wear it and this tends to be my number one go-to in my kit for shoots too. Cargo’s EyeLighter. If you haven’t tried this then go get one! (How’s that for an articulate makeup tip! LOL.) It is a brightener—if you see the little dazzle in the tearducts that celebs have on the red carpet, this will get you that! A perfect compliment to any eye makeup or on its own to brighten up tired eyes. I actually gave my new one to a celeb I worked on recently so I need to get another. NARS Blush in Orgasm—cuz if you ain’t gettin’ it you might as well apply it! Okay, bad joke. This is a gorgeous blush though for most skin tones and certainly brightens up any face. M.A.C Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Grey Utility. More subtle than using black and I am not a fan of brown eyeliner—don’t even own one, not in my makeup kit nor for personal use. Grey is a great day shade. Or, if you want to attempt a smoky eye but are fearful, try it on with grey to ease into the drama of black. Okay, that was six! Sorry! My faves all combined make great day makeup for everyone though.

Beauty Splurge Splurge on foundation, blush and skincare.

Beauty Bargain Scrimp on mascara for sure! For trendy looks that you won’t use for a long period of time, I would scrimp, but for your basic everyday go-to beauty bag, invest in it.

First Fragrance Christian Dior Poison. I practically bathed in it.

Current Fragrance I do not wear fragrance now. One year for my 32nd birthday all my friends bought me perfume—I think I got eight bottles that day. I wondered if I should shower more often than once a day… I thought it was a hint! LOL.

Biggest Beauty Fail I was a teen in the ’80s so I did all the beauty fails! The big hair, asymmetrical Sassoon cuts, perms, highlights, Flirt gel haircolour, rat-tail (ok, THAT was a fail!). The only thing I regret was that rat-tail!

Beauty Pet Peeve Eyebrows. A constant repeat of bad. There are enough articles written on how-tos, I think. Ladies, come on! Drives me crazy. Hard not to bother a perfect stranger and say ‘here’s my card, please, it’s on me, let me fix them.’ It should almost be a sponsored public service announcement.

Best Beauty Tips Take vitamins and drinks lots of water. Cliché I know but it makes a WORLD of difference. And don’t stop moisturizer at your face. Cream your entire body. Be happy—happiness does radiate to your outward glow. It truly is what’s inside that counts…. well, plus good eyebrows!

Beauty Career Advice Follow your dream. If you have a passion for beauty and being a hair and makeup artist, then just do it! I’d do it again. Follow your heart and your dreams, stay focused and positive and everything will be okay. Be prepared for good and bad—it can be stressful, it can be feast or famine, it can be catty. (Although the catty part seems to be diminishing—no one tolerates that anymore.) I’ve been sooo lucky with my career. Yes, I know I have talent but I mean lucky that I got to work with great people. M.A.C Fashion Cares, L’Oréal Fashion Week (lead hair for three seasons), Canadian Idol (lead hairstylist for two seasons) Stylin’ Gypsies, So Chic etc etc. Just follow your dreams—it happens and I thank my lucky stars for my persistence that I learned from my mother.

Natalia Zurawska – The Best Makeup and Hair Products for Summer

The Best Makeup and Hair Products for Summer

Summer is just around the corner and every woman deserves to look and feel her best.  Here are some of my favourite products that take mere minutes with amazing results.  Look even more beautiful – effortlessly!

Conair Hot Sticks

images

These little curling rods heat up in just a few minutes.  Simply section hair down the middle and start rolling away whichever direction you like.  Keep in mind that the larger the roller, the looser the curl.  To prevent hair “hooking at the end” start from the middle and wrap the hair around tightly.  The ends of the little rods connect, so there are no pins or clips involved.  The sections of hair do not need to be the same size, as it will just add to the great texture. The Conair Hot Stix curl even course hair, eliminate frizz for beautiful, lasting curls.

www.conair.com

*Quick Tip

To make curls last even longer, add a dollop of mousse beforehand and brush through before wrapping.  Tresemme is my favourite for styling products.

Their Volumizing Extra Hold mousse is so light and airy and the price point can’t be beat.

tresemme_mousse

Finish with a spritz of Tres Two Hairspray by Tresemme for perfect hair.

Moroccan Oil

moroccan_oil

The Moroccan Oil line of hair products is amazing for repairing hair from sun damage, enhancing shine and the smell is amazing. Their Original Oil Treatment is a staple.

Dust it by Osis

osis_dust_it

This amazing mattifying powder adds so much volume to fine hair.  Simply apply to your crown and massage it in with fingers, or sprinkle in and backcomb for so much added oomph in seconds!

Goody Hair Accessories and Brushes

goody_elastics

Goody makes such an amazing array of hair combs, brushes, “ouchless” elastics, as well as hairbands and pins.  This company is amazing, with clear elastics to match any skin tone, or seasonal colours as well as a copper infused brushes to reduce dandruff dramatically.  Amazing!

www.goody.com

Jerome Russell Spray

jerome_russell

Jerome Russell Spray is by far one of my favourite hair products.  It is a temporary spray that washes out completely in your next shampoo.  It does not run.  The variety of colours available, are almost limitless.  This amazing product is great for touching up roots in a split second. Great for photo shoots, that hot date or business meeting when you don’t have time for a salon visit.  It is also great to try out if you want to go a different colour and see what it looks like first.  Simply style hair and spray as a final step and allow to dry for a few minutes.  At $8.99 you can’t go wrong.

Nothing enhances makeup like Brite Prep by Cover Fx.  This primer has an SPF of 50, moisturizes skin, makes it look so bright and fresh as well as makes foundation and or powder application seamless.  The formulation also decreases lines and wrinkles.  It is one of my favourites.  Simply apply with fingers or a foundation brush before foundation and/or powder.

Hello Flawless by Benefit

hello_flawless

This amazing powder with SPF 15 is a must have for any woman.  I am absolutely in love.  Choose your coverage – the powder comes with a brush as well as sponge. The brush is perfect for a more sheer finish, while the sponge can be used for spot blending or for full coverage.  The container is super cute as well with a “lit up” mirror.  I have dry skin and have used it on many skin types, works effortlessly on them all.  I only needed a light touch up 5 hours later. Hello Flawless comes in 6 different shades, perfect for a wide variety of skin tones.

Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes by Benefit

benefit_beautiful_eyes

This amazing palette has a great colour selection that looks great on all skin tones.  It also comes with a concealer.  I like to put some concealer on the eyelid as well as underneath the eye.  This  makes the eyeshadow last longer.  A concealer and eyeshadow brush are both included as well as instructions in this super cute packaging.  It is also perfect to throw into a beach bag, purse and even compact enough for a clutch.

www.benefitcosmetics.com

Cargo blu ray

cargo_blu_ray_blush

Cargo blu ray Blush/Highlighter is my absolute favourite. The consistency and colour are perfect for almost all skin tones.  It blends so beautifully!  Also comes with a great mirror.

M.A.C Eyelashes

mac_lashes

M.A.C has such an amazing array of false lashes.  The band lashes are perfect for a more dramatic look, or individuals to enhance your day look.

*Quick Tip

Use Duo Surgical adhesive for band lashes and specific glue for individual lashes (it will say on the package) as they are different consistencies.

When applying false lashes, always apply a little extra glue to the ends for added security and place as close to the eye line as possible and curl both the false lashes as well as your real ones to create a seamless line.

Always check to see if the lashes suit you first – smaller as well as individual lashes look best on soft/smaller features, whereas big lashes look great on big eyes and more defined features.

If the lashes are too long, (apply to eye first with no glue to check) and then measure how much you need to trim (DO NOT do the trimming close to your eyes, and make sure that the lashes are symmetrical after you are done.) Apply glue, let air dry for about 30 seconds so the glue becomes tacky and apply to eye – make sure they are symmetrically placed.  Avoid placing the lashes too close to your inner eye, as this may cause some tearing.

mac_liner

To finish off, always apply a liner such as M.A.C  Fluidline eye liner in blacktrack  so the lash line is blended seamlessly.

For a less dramatic look, cut a lash band in half (provided it is symmetrical and not flared) and use only on the outer ends of lashes, or for a more dramatic look layer false band lashes together for extra oomph! I always like to add a few coats of mascara as well.

lashblast

Covergirl Lashblast Mascara does wonders to open up the eyes, providing amazing volume and length. It also comes in different colours to enhance your eye colour and the price point can’t be beat.

*Quick Tip

Use the waterproof version for swimming, weddings or other cry worthy events.  It comes off gently and easily with baby oil.

www.covergirl.ca

Nothing looks better in the summer than healthy, glowing skin. This is why exfoliating is so important.  Yves Rocher makes an amazing Oriental Velvety Skin Scrub.  This scrub contains Organic Argan Oil along with Moroccan Clay with the added power of Argan Kernel powder for extreme hydration and exfoliation.  The scent is magnificent with hints of sunkissed fruit, rose and sugary notes.  Massage into wet skin and rinse well.  The result is a beautiful glow.

yves_rocher

www.yvesrocher.ca

Sunblock is such a major staple today regardless of your age.  All it takes is about a shot worth for the whole body.  Apply before bronzer and makeup.  Lots of creams as well as makeup have sunblock infused already.  Just make sure to apply 30 minutes beforehand so it has time to absorb in your skin.  Reapply after vigorous exercise and swimming.  There are so many great companies out there.

I love Ombrelle by L’Oreal.  This sunblock is colour as well as PABA free so no need to worry if you have sensitive skin. It also protects you up to 45 times longer from UVA and UVB rays.

ombrelle

www.ombrelle.ca

Banana Boat has such an amazing smell and also great protection, depending on the SPF you choose. They also have a baby line, sports line as well as great after sun products.  I especially love their spay on sunblock – it feels so light yet provides great protection.

banana_boat

www.bananaboat.com

There is also a reason why Coppertone has been around forever. It is a really great product.  They also carry a Baby line for tear free application, a Sports line which really does last longer and does not run when you sweat. You can order samples right from their website as well.

Lorac Tantalizer Body Bronzer Luminizer

lorac_tantalizer

This is one of the best bronzing lotions on the market in my opinion.  It blends so evenly as well as looking great on all skin tones including very fair skin.  It has a beautiful dewy finish, without looking sparkly.  It is great for both day and evening. Lorac’s Tantalizer can be used on the body and enhances muscle tone. It goes on very evenly, just remember that a little goes a long way and make sure to let it dry thoroughly before getting dressed.  This is not a self-tanner, so if you are looking for a no commitment tan, this is the product for you. It also smells like heaven.

If you prefer a powder bronzer, NARS makes an amazing one called Laguna. It also suits all skin tones, makes skin look glowing and beautiful.

nars_bronzer

Both products available at www.sephora.com

*Quick Tips

When applying bronzer, apply with a decent size powder brush or Kabuki brush.  There is no one company imo that makes amazing brushes – I do love M.A.C, Quo Professional and Sonia Kashuk, as well as Cover FX.  You want to make sure that the bronzer is only applied to the parts of the body where the sun would naturally hit – forehead, cheekbones, nose and chin.  Remember that a little goes a long way and you want to be sure that the added colour is blended well – also make sure to add a bit to cleavage (it enhances it) as well as to your collarbone and other areas where skin is showing  to match.  The most important things to avoid are streaking, an orangy oompa loompa look as well as shades that are much too dark as it will only look like dirt.

To finish off looking absolutely fabulous, there is nothing nicer than a coat of O.P.I nail polish.  With such a huge variety of colours, as well as long lasting power, give your nails the pampering they deserve.

*Quick Tip

When applying nail polish, always add a base coat and apply in three easy strokes, one in the middle, then on both sides.  This prevents streaking.  It is much better to apply a few thin coats than one or two thick coats.  To finish, apply a topcoat with three strokes as well and apply to the backside of the nail to create a seal.  This makes the manicure last much longer and prevents chipping. Allow to dry thoroughly – about 25 minutes.  If you are in a big hurry rinse hands with cold water which allows the polish to set faster – about 15 minutes.

opi

* Quick Tips

To prevent makeup and lipstick from melting, simply add a little ice pack in your cosmetic case or beach bag.  Always put in a sandwich bag first to prevent melting.

ice_packs

Ziploc bags are amazing not only for your MP3 player and other valuables when you are travelling.  If you want to save a lot of space, simply pour in some shampoo and conditioner in separate bags and roll up.  No leaking or breaking and you can write what you want on the white little label.

Your Prom Makeup Questions Answered

25-03-2010
Professional makeup artist and friend of Vervegirl, Dee Daly answers your Prom makeup questions. With over ten years of experience under her belt, Dee has worked with models, art directors, photographers and stylists from Wedding Bells, Life & Fashion, Oxygen, Eye Candy, Zink, Style, Applied Arts, and highly acclaimed New York on-line magazine, Zoo-Zoom. She has also worked on campaigns for Nike, Wal-Mart, the Canadian Newspaper Association and Big Star Jeans. Got a question? Ask it in the comment box below!

Q: I have very small eyes and because of this you can barely see my eye lids (like Catherine Zeta Jone’s eyes). This means you can barely see my eye shadow when I put it on, which I hate because I love playing with colours. How can I make my eyes appear larger and be able to see the eye shadow colours better for my prom night?
Kristine

A:
Hello Kristine,

Don’t fret! We are blessed with different features and there are always ways of making them more pronounced.  One way of making small eyes appear bigger is lining the bottom eye lid with some white eye liner. The key is getting the white pencil right in at the lash line which will give them a more wide eyed appearance – perfect for girls with smaller set eyes.  As for getting your eye shadow more visible there are a few tricks you can do to accomplish that.  First, bring the shadow up a little higher than the crease of your eye lid.  This will give the eye lid a little more depth and you will be able to see the colour on your eyes.  Another helpful hint is bringing the shadow out towards the corner of your eyes giving the eyes a more winged look, or what we call a cat eye.  The trick is to blend, blend, blend. You should never see where one colour starts or stops.
Dee

Q: I love knowing about the best bronzers and best make up for the summer. Could you share some examples of ways to wear your makeup so you look good near the ocean, pool or simply on the street?
Thanks, Kristen

A: Hello Kristen

Well, for summer it is always all about the sun kissed look, but remember you don’t have to spend all your time in the sun. If you do indulge in the sun’s rays,  please remember to use your SPF.  There are plenty of products out there that will give you a bronzed glow without the harmful rays of the sun. I like to keep my summer look really fresh and clean. During the warm months, there’s no need to hide behind a full face of makeup.  A little tinted moisturizer, a bronzer,  mascara and gloss is all you need.   You can also use your bronzer on your eye lids as an eye shadow. Remember to use your bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face (forehead, temples &cheeks).  Keep your skin looking dewy is always a must. Stay away for the setting powders and if you have freckles don’t make them disappear – show them off!  A little pinky gloss or a berry lip stain and off you go! Lip stains are great if you’re spending time in the water, they’re long lasting and won’t fade. Don’t forget your waterproof mascara! Just say no to raccoon eyes!

Natalia Zurawska – A Good Brush

Hair Brushes

Having a good quality hairbrush or comb  is so important when styling as well as brushing your hair.  Brushes promote promote shine by evenly distributing the oils in your hair as well as preventing breakage.  Paddlle or cushion brushes are great for achieving the sleek look. Round brushes are great for volume as well as flipping out the ends.  A wide tooth comb is great for combing wet hair.  The best method is to start from the bottom and work your way up to the scalp to prevent and damage. A tailcomb is great for parting the hair as well as back combing.
