I had a chance to catch up with the uber stylish and always lovely Alon Freeman backstage as he tweaked and polished the looks of Philip Sparks Spring 2011 show.
Name: Alon Freeman
Job: Fashion & Wardrobe Stylist
Website: www.judyinc.com/alonfreeman
Show Details: Philip Sparks Tailored Goods Inc. SPRING 2011
AL: You have been collaborating with Phillip Sparks for a few years now, how many collections have you styled for him?
AF: This will be our fourth season of collaboration and first season of his woman’s line.
AL: What can you attribute to the success of your Fashion Designer/Fashion Stylist relationship?
AF: I think from the beginning Philip and I have had an ease of communication. We share a nostalgia for the way menswear has been made/marketed in eras gone by and the desire to bring the best of that into a modern context. We have developed an almost wordless communication at this point and yet are still able to surprise each other by bringing out ideas the other wouldn’t have thought of.
AL: What are the top trends in menswear that we can expect to see for SS11?
AF: Above all I think colour is really important, the grey cloud of the last couple season’s is lifting and strong colour comes back to menswear. As for key items, its a season to own more than one trench coat, there are so many great versions a guy should have more than one!
AL: Who do you see as being the biggest industry leaders in the Canadian Menswear?
AF: I find it’s those working on a smaller scale that are driving the industry. The big retailers are often slow to come around to shifts in menswear and its the designers like Philip and the smaller men’s-focused retailers that carry him that are really pushing the industry forward. We have so many great menswear boutiques in Canada now, some of whom have also created and had success with their own lines, that the fashion-aware male shopper has great choices and great quality at the boutique level.
AL: Which phase of fashion show production is the most rewarding for you?
AF: I actually love the casting because you get to see the clothes in motion and how they function on different types of guys, its glimpse into how the clothes will look on the street.
AL: Are you taking a holiday after the shows?
AF: Fashion knows no holiday! haha. Maybe at Christmas time.
