FAKE IT

A common concern for brides is whether or not to wear fake eyelashes for fear of looking over the top on their wedding day. I am all for not adding anything if it is not needed—a total advocate for “less is more,” but in my opinion even the most natural bridal makeup look can use a set of lashes. In fact, my favourite use for them is when there is not a lot of eye makeup being used at all. They just seem to add that little je ne sais quoi, where you look at the person and can’t quite figure out why they look better, they just do. Not to mention how they make you feel….sort of like a fresh new haircut or a great pair of shoes. Even for those brides that aren’t really “makeup wearers” and are scared that when their makeup artist is done with them their husband won’t recognize them at the altar! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught a bride batting her eyelashes at herself in the mirror after I have applied them.

Now for the important part…choosing the right pair. The last thing we want is a drag queen bride! Subtlety is key. You don’t want it to be obvious you are wearing fake eyelashes. You just want your eyes to look better. My all-time staple, over-the-counter drugstore pair is by Quo, #801’s ($7 at Shoppers Drug Mart). I also love the Flirt-It Lash Duo from Sephora. This pack has a full strip and a half strip and if you are truly going for subtle the half strip is perfect. Both look natural, not too long, and not too noticeable. I always carry them in my kit, whether I’m working on a bride or a magazine editorial. If natural is the objective, on they go.

Tips for Soft & Sexy Summer Skin

We’ve been hiding under layers of clothes & dead skin cells all winter. However, the days are getting longer and our fashions shorter. Time to free our skin from it’s winter blahs and get ready for those short shorts and tiny bikinis!

Here’s how: 

Keep it lukewarm:  Switch to lukewarm soaks. Hot bath or showers may feel good however, they rob your skin of moisture, making it scaly and rough.

Exfoliate: A weekly exfoliation is necessary to rid the skin of surface impurities and remove the layer of dead skin cells. This will provide a fresh, youthful look.

Moisturize: Regularly hydrated skin is soft. Apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp, like right out of the bath or shower. Lukewarm water makes skin more receptive and lotions will seal in that moisture.  

Nighttime is the best time: Apply extra lotion at night. Your skin is at rest and the body heals itself when you sleep so pile on the extra moisture. Especially on those rough spots like heals, elbows, knees and hands.

H2O: Staying well hydrated from the inside out is just as important if not more important than any lotion.

Get moving: Exercise gets the blood circulating and brings fresh oxygen to the skin.
Keep shaving: Believe it or not, regular shaving helps skin stay soft. It acts as an exfoliant, manually removing microscopic layers of dead, dry skin cells and revealing healthier, softer skin.

*If you don’t shave everyday or use other methods of hair removal then make sure to exfoliate using either a loofa, mesh sponge or body scrubs.

Shaving tips to stay “Soft, Sexy & Bump Free”

Wet is best: The trick is to wet your skin and let the warmth and moisture of the water soften the hair shaft before shaving. 

Let it slide:  Look for razors with lubricated strips, pivoting heads and multiple blades. They give a closer shave with fewer nicks.

Exfoliate: If you don’t shave regularly, make sure you exfoliate before shaving. It gets ride of dead skin cells that could clog up your blade.

Fresh is best: Be sure to change your razor (if disposable) or your cartridges on a regular basis. A dull blade can lead to nicks.

With or against the grain?:: There is no right or wrong way. It really is a personnel preference.  My choice is against. It gives a closer shave and smoother finish.

Finishing touch: Make sure to apply oil or moisturizer. Especially on your legs. The skin on your legs has few oil glands and has a tendency for

dryness.
