FAKE IT

wbjune09_flirtitA common concern for brides is whether or not to wear fake eyelashes for fear of looking over the top on their wedding day. I am all for not adding anything if it is not needed—a total advocate for “less is more,” but in my opinion even the most natural bridal makeup look can use a set of lashes. In fact, my favourite use for them is when there is not a lot of eye makeup being used at all. They just seem to add that little je ne sais quoi, where you look at the person and can’t quite figure out why they look better, they just do. Not to mention how they make you feel….sort of like a fresh new haircut or a great pair of shoes. Even for those brides that aren’t really “makeup wearers” and are scared that when their makeup artist is done with them their husband won’t recognize them at the altar! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught a bride batting her eyelashes at herself in the mirror after I have applied them.

Now for the important part…choosing the right pair. The last thing we want is a drag queen bride! Subtlety is key. You don’t want it to be obvious you are wearing fake eyelashes. You just want your eyes to look better. My all-time staple, over-the-counter drugstore pair is by Quo, #801’s ($7 at Shoppers Drug Mart). I also love the Flirt-It Lash Duo from Sephora. This pack has a full strip and a half strip and if you are truly going for subtle the half strip is perfect. Both look natural, not too long, and not too noticeable. I always carry them in my kit, whether I’m working on a bride or a magazine editorial. If natural is the objective, on they go.

Tips for Soft & Sexy Summer Skin

We’ve been hiding under layers of clothes & dead skin cells all winter. However, the days are getting longer and our fashions shorter. Time to free our skin from it’s winter blahs and get ready for those short shorts and tiny bikinis!

Here’s how:

sylvie2Keep it lukewarm:  Switch to lukewarm soaks. Hot bath or showers may feel good however, they rob your skin of moisture, making it scaly and rough.

Exfoliate: A weekly exfoliation is necessary to rid the skin of surface impurities and remove the layer of dead skin cells. This will provide a fresh, youthful look.

Moisturize: Regularly hydrated skin is soft. Apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp, like right out of the bath or shower. Lukewarm water makes skin more receptive and lotions will seal in that moisture.

Nighttime is the best time: Apply extra lotion at night. Your skin is at rest and the body heals itself when you sleep so pile on the extra moisture. Especially on those rough spots like heals, elbows, knees and hands.

H2O: Staying well hydrated from the inside out is just as important if not more important than any lotion.

Get moving: Exercise gets the blood circulating and brings fresh oxygen to the skin.
Keep shaving: Believe it or not, regular shaving helps skin stay soft. It acts as an exfoliant, manually removing microscopic layers of dead, dry skin cells and revealing healthier, softer skin.

*If you don’t shave everyday or use other methods of hair removal then make sure to exfoliate using either a loofa, mesh sponge or body scrubs.

Shaving tips to stay “Soft, Sexy & Bump Free”

sylvie3Wet is best: The trick is to wet your skin and let the warmth and moisture of the water soften the hair shaft before shaving.

Let it slide:  Look for razors with lubricated strips, pivoting heads and multiple blades. They give a closer shave with fewer nicks.

Exfoliate: If you don’t shave regularly, make sure you exfoliate before shaving. It gets ride of dead skin cells that could clog up your blade.

Fresh is best: Be sure to change your razor (if disposable) or your cartridges on a regular basis. A dull blade can lead to nicks.

With or against the grain?:: There is no right or wrong way. It really is a personnel preference.  My choice is against. It gives a closer shave and smoother finish.

Finishing touch: Make sure to apply oil or moisturizer. Especially on your legs. The skin on your legs has few oil glands and has a tendency for

dryness.

What do our artists do in their spare time? Well, provided they have any, some express their artistic abilities through other outlets. Not satisfied to use only the body as a canvas, Judy INC’s Dana Mooney utilizes both her airbrushing and painting skills to create pieces like the one pictured. On the Rise Artist Collective is doing a show featuring 15 local artists, one piece each, all for under $200. The new venture, ART MART, is focused on providing quality and affordability. Speaking with the organizer, the idea would be to buy your art and eat too. The prices ensure that you won’t have to live like a starving artist and with all of the proceeds going directly to the artist, they won’t either!  Check out the exhibit until May 30th, Wednesday-Sunday from 10-6.

Parasuco F/W 09

What goes perfectly with your morning coffee? Baby quiche and a 9 am fashion show, of course! Parasuco revealed their F/W 09 collection, look book styled by Judy INC’s Amy Lu, in a private showing this morning. The Montreal based label remained heavy in denim, loved the Boy jeans, and black, see the versatile hooded scarf and convertible leather jacket, below. While I loved the breakfast (I’m a hungry girl) and the show, there was something even better. Nope, not the male model. It was the complimentary Halle jeans, being delivered directly to my door. Merci beaucoup!

A Stroke of Beauty
By Jennifer Cummer

Do you ever find yourself rushing to ready for your day early in the morning, the news advising you in the background, when all of a sudden you are startled by the anchor perfect complexion at a painful 7.30 A.M.? Do you then pause your early morning routine to ponder just how they look so radiant?

Well, her name is Jessica Steblyk and she is the secret make-up weapon for the flawless and fresh complexions of many of our adored television personalities. Her careful brush strokes, accurate eye liner, deliberate hair placement, positive attitude and hunger for a challenge have made Steblyk the resident make-up artist on shows like W Network’s Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag and City TV’s Breakfast Television. She has also worked with celebrities like Ricky Gervais, Jessica Lucas and Rob Feenie and large companies like Hello! Magazine, Coke Canada and MTV Canada. This is quite the roster for a veteran of the biz; only she is not even ten years into her dream career. Her success is proof that hard work does pay off.

Steblyk discovered the art of make-up while in high school as a self proclaimed ‘drama nerd’. This passion and her natural talent led the young Jessica to move to Vancouver at nineteen and obtain training at Blanche MacDonald’s Broad Stroke Master Program. There aspiring make-up artists learn everything from the fundamentals to creating believable monsters and all levels in between. Although she discovered early on that monsters were not her ‘thing’, she flourished with the diverse training she received. What this artist does love is when something beautiful and breath taking emerges from a good day’s work. Her ideal client is not a celebrity or model like many of her peers. Rather, she loves the idea of becoming someone’s personal make-up artist. Truly forming a relationship with that client and her canvas, their face, allows for many of her beautiful moments to be created over time.

Steblyk is represented by Judy Inc., a Toronto-based agency that also represents photographers and stylists across Canada. This connection will allow for a smooth transition for Ms. Steblyk’s next stage, moving to Toronto. Although her move is for personal reasons, she hopes to maintain a professional presence in both cities. With her talent and drive, we are sure Vancouver will only be more than happy to oblige one of their favourite make-up artists. Does this go-getter creator have plans beyond a two-city existence? She would love to teach the next generation of make-up artists and impart some of the tools of the trade she continues to collect. For now she has some valuable advice for those just entering this fast paced industry. Without trying to discourage any emerging make-up artist she does warn of the hard work and self discipline needed to succeed. “Most people spend four years on their careers (through university degrees) while our training is one a year, so be sure to allow some time for knocking on people’s door to truly find your professional footing.” She notes too the importance of having a strong look book where it should always be a case of quality over quantity. Looking back over her career thus far, Steblyk would not change a thing.

For more information on Jessica Steblyk or Judy Inc please go to www.damsel.ca or www.judyinc.com/jessicasteblyk/book1.html and be sure to browse through her many look books to review the beautiful creative moments she has manufactured, one beautiful stoke at a time.

Swagger like us

Three-piece suit? Yes, you can! White socks? Not so fast! Just ask the best-dressed men of Holt Renfrew. And, yes, these two great stylish minds do think alike — right down to the identical striped socks they were both wearing when we dropped in.

BY: Tanya Hosten

Clothes do make the man: Donovan Whyte (left) and Sekou Sheriff (right) lounge in the Made to Measure studio at Holt Renfrew. Turned out in the latest collections now in store, Whyte rules in Prada; Sheriff nails it in Paul Smith. (Visit holtrenfrew.com for details.)

Sway: What is your earliest fashion memory?
Donovan Whyte: Getting my Michael Jackson red-leather “Beat It” jacket. This was the first piece I saw on a celebrity and I knew I wanted it. When I got it, I felt like I was in the video.
Sekou Sheriff: When my father was a kid back in Africa, he would go to Europe in the ’80s to shop for us. His favourite designer was French designer Pierre Cardin. In the ’90s, I discovered Ralph Lauren and fell in love with him. I love the preppy, classic look of his style.”

Who inspires your sense of style?
DW: Billy Dee Williams for his swag, Kenny Lattimore for his style, and Diddy for his street cred.
SS: I love some celebrities, but they don’t influence my sense of style. Most of them are fashion victims. Tom Ford is really my role model.

What one item should every man own for Spring ‘09?
DW: The driving shoe.
SS: A classic loafer, because you can dress it up or dress it down; wear it with jeans, shorts or dress pants.”

Who is your favorite menswear designer?
DW: Hedi Slimane, because his designs are works of art with no detail forgotten, yet the pieces possess a sense of street edginess that no other designer has captured in menswear.
SS: Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford. I find many similarities between them: class, masculinity and sexiness.”

If you were not working in fashion, what would you be doing?
DW: I would be working in architecture, because I’m obsessed with design.
SS: I’d be a lawyer or a politician. I always wanted to be different, to look different, most importantly to stand out in a crowd.

What do you feel sexiest in?
DW: My Dolce & Gabbana underwear.
SS: Fitted blue denim, a slim white shirt, and a tailored jacket with dress shoes.

Finish this sentence: “Men should NEVER wear…”
DW: Uggs.
SS: White socks, unless you’re going to the gym.

Recession-wha?

recessionista \ri-se-shən-is-ta\

According to Hilary Chan-Kent, Blo Blow Dry Bar’s PR dynamo, a recessionista is a seeker of all things fabulous but frugal.  During periods of reduced economic activity she can be found trolling the aisles of Winners for Chanel flats at 150% off.  She arrives at parties with sommelier-caliber picks, yet her wallet is only nine bucks lighter.  “Social currency”, she says, “need not cost an arm and a leg”.

Buzzwords, the kind that spread from the school yard to Parliament Hill, can be flash in the pan and without provocation, think Paris Hilton, or just the opposite, being representative of not only a trendy idea, but a moment in history. Currently, it’s words like ‘change’ and ‘recession’ that are at the forefront of everyone’s minds. What, however, does that mean for those of us who have yet to be directly effected by the state of the economy?  The offset of bailouts and layoffs is sure to hit all of us, eventually, right? Rather than turn a blind eye and hope for the best, the savvy commoner must budget!

This does not have to mean sacrificing style for the cause, just tightening your grip on expenses.  Perhaps most important is realizing that price does not necessarily equal quality.  More often, the product that costs a fraction of your current higher end choice is just as good, if not better! Labels, packaging and branding play a huge role in the way society views quality, something the professionals know all too well!

Take a tip from someone who knows, hair and makeup artist, Tana D’Amico:

”I’ll let you in on a little secret.  For years I’ve been filling a container of high priced hair gel…with Dippity-Do. That’s right!  Years ago, when I was just starting out, I had the privilege of assisting a top editorial hairdresser, who regularly works for Vogue Italia, Paris and American Vogue. He used Dippity-Do as his main gel, just concealed it in an unmarked container.  I haven’t been able to find the right unmarked container, so I just re-filled my high priced one.  The reason we disguise it is to avoid any aggressive heart palpitations from elitist fashionista types on set!  It’s a great overall gel for wet looks, finger curls, or as a setting lotion for curly or straight hair. I love it – and the price!”

                                                                                   http://www.dippity-do.ca/

Following advice like this will not only keep your bank account looking good, but you as well.  Avoid the overwhelming pressure of the downturn and check back for more (FREE!) tips on unleashing your inner recessionista!

Deacon’s Corner

deacons_logo

Working away last week, I was distracted by what sounded to me, and my innocent ears, like an Herbal Essences commercial. It turned out it was just my co-worker thoroughly enjoying her morning meal. The cause of this commotion was, surprisingly, a sandwich courtesy of a new café in Gastown, Deacons Corner. Curiosity peaked and expectations high, I headed in to check out the aforementioned meal. Prompt, jovial service, perfectly spiced hashbrowns and delicious coffee aside, the main attraction was undoubtedly the sandwich. Combining of all things crucial to an egg sandwich, cheese, bacon and tomato, the grilled bread is what sets this sandwich apart from the rest of the breakfast world. Available all day and coming in at only $6.25, I have a feeling that this is going to become a regular indulgence. Located on the corner of Main and Alexander Street, the menu has plenty more to offer, so check it out for yourself!
