Beauty Mixology

More of us are becoming aware of ingredients found in our beauty products and interestingly enough, a lot of cosmetic companies have been a step ahead using natural ingredients that benefit the consumer. Well there may be peppermint-based lipglosses or lipstains with cinnamon; they may not be available in your favorite colour. Why not mix up your own? Lab coat not required.

Cayenne, a common ingredient found in plumping lip products. Crazy, but cayennetrue.  So why not create your own plumping lippy by adding a pinch of cayenne or even wasabi powder to your favorite lip colour? The natural heating properties rush the blood to the surface of your lip giving a temporary Jolie-effect.

peppermintPeppermint, a dual-action additive as it has a slight plumping effect as well as masks undesirable breath faster than you can say ‘Pucker up and blow’. Add a drop or two of peppermint oil into your favorite lip colour and you will be whistling in no time. One of my peppermint pre-mixed faves: Beauty Rush Lip gloss by Victoria Secrets.

Cinnamon- not just for lattes anymore. Cinnamon is known for having cinnamonproperties that promote healthy digestion. Adding a few drops of cinnamon oil or a pinch of cinnamon to your lipcolour may not solve your post-holiday tummy woes but using cinnamon regularly has proven results and may give new meaning to: ’A moment on the lips….’

Kissing a lot of frogs before you find your Prince can put you at risk of the dreaded cold-sore. Clove, another additive to lipsticks is known for it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant healing properties. Although not a cure, adding clove oil into your lipgloss or lipstick can provide comfort while healing.

Whether getting plumped for that romantic Valentine’s date or freshened up post-spicy dinner, your lips will be deliciously ready.

Some hot lip tips from Andrea Claire, senior makeup artist with FACE atelier (clients include Alanis Morissette, The Veronicas, and Kelly Rowan)

· If you don’t want your lips to be the first thing people see, limit your use of gloss! Go for a neutral lip shade such as FACE atelier’s Wheat or Latte lipstick.

· For fuller lips, stretch your lips (aka super fake smile )when applying your lip color as this will fill color into every nook and give a plumper look. Top your lip with a reflective lip glaze such as FACE atelier’s Ice.

· To exaggerate lips, mix a dash of cayenne pepper into your gloss. This natural warming effect will temporarily rush the blood to the surface therefore plumping.
